For Customers

Why is there an Arkwright's sign on the front of the shop?

Our Arkwright’s sign gets a lot of attention, in fact many people have their photo taken in front of it! The sign was a 60th birthday prank for the shop’s previous owner, nicknamed Arkwright by the locals, over 10 years ago. He and his wife currently produce all our bakery items, so you can still see him when he makes his deliveries through the week.

Can I pay by card?

Yes, Withywood does accept card payments. Due to banking charges we ask customers to make a minimum payment of £5.

I heard customers can have a tab with you, is it true?

It is true that we allow some customers to pick up their goods and pay later. However, we’re sure you can understand that this is a service available only to regular customers.

How do I make sure you have the newspaper/magazine I want?

If you are visiting the village and would like to reserve a newspaper or magazine, please contact us using any of the methods on our Contact page. We shouldn’t have any problems with newspapers, but to ensure we have the magazine you want please try and contact us a few days before your visit. All you have to do then is come to the shop and collect.

Can I order hot snacks over the phone?

Because we make all hot snacks fresh to order it is often best to phone ahead so you don’t have to wait around, as we usually allow up to 15 minutes for an order. Lots of customers like to phone ahead so they can get their lunch quickly in between working hours, but some people like to browse the book exchange while they wait. It’s really up to you.

I'm staying in a holiday cottage/caravan nearby. Will you stock the products I'm used to buying?

The shop is very well stocked, however, if you want to guarantee you can get the products you use every day at home then simply contact us and we can arrange to have what you need instore so you can fully enjoy your stay in the village. Whether it’s ground coffee, champagne, or fresh fish, we’re happy to go that extra mile to ensure you don’t have to travel in to Leyburn for your shopping during your stay.

For Trade

I have a product I'd like to sell in your shop

We’re always happy to hear from people who would like to showcase their products. We’re in a prime location, being the only convenience store on the main road between Aysgarth and Leyburn, and get passing trade all year round including a huge influx of tourism in the summer months. If you’re interested in selling your products, please do get in touch with us via the Contact page with a bit of information about yourself.

Catering for events

We can provide sandwich, savoury, and sweet platters for any event. Everything is homemade, including the bread, which adds that special touch your guests will love. Cupcakes

Our shop stocks a very popular range of cupcakes throughout the week. These are supplied by Signature Bake, and you can find more information about flavours and how to order them for your events by visiting www.signaturebake.co.uk

Book Exchange

How does the Book Exchange work?

It couldn’t be simpler. Choose a book from our collection, and when you’ve finished reading it bring it back and exchange it for another one.

Is it really free?

Yes! It really is free to use, but we do encourage people to make a small donation to the Great North Air Ambulance or any of the charities we collect for in the shop.

Why should I donate to the Great North Air Ambulance?

This team of amazing individuals needs charity donations of £4m to keep their ambulances in the air for 365 days a year.

The Yorkshire Dales has a population over 19,000 and receives over 9 million visitors every year. In an area where hospital treatment is hard to get to, services like the Great North Air Ambulance help to ensure that each and every one of us can get the medical attention we need as quickly as possible. Your donations really do count, so look out for the green and white tin instore! For more information, please visit www.greatnorthairambulance.co.uk

I have books at home that I don't want, can I give them to you?

Of course! Your unwanted books might be just what someone else has been looking for. Please don’t throw your books in the bin! Why not bring them in to the store and see if there’s something you’d like to swap them for?

I really like the book I chose, can I keep it?

If you really want to keep your book, we don’t mind. If you do intend to keep your book, please consider making a small donation to the Great North Air Ambulance service, for which we have a green tin on the counter
